Are there any grants for making movies available? Well, there are some out there, but finding them may be a different kind of story altogether.
Why is it so hard to find grants for making movies? There is no one answer to this question, though some may speculate that it has to do with the number of people attempting to create a film. Given this large number, were there grants easily accessible the amount of applications would be astronomical. Thus, these grants do exist it’s just a matter of tracking them down. So, where does one begin to look? Well, that’s another tricky question. For the most part, it’s a good idea to start with public broadcasting.
It is highly unlikely that a major motion picture studio will fund any amateur film on a whim. Since there is a lot money involved in creating a picture, most of these companies will not bother will small grants. However, public broadcasting stations tend to be on the lookout for great new filmmakers quite often. This is why the public system might be your best option. Aside from that public broadcasting company, you might try and send a screenplay to a director that you admire. Now, this may not gain you an immediate response, but there are ways to have your script read.
You can hire an agent to distribute your screenplay for you; you might be able to make the right connections in your town; or you may have a friend that can pass it along at work. If none of these things apply to you, begin searching for grants for making movies through government websites. If you head to your government website, click on the movie link (you may have to dig to find this), and then search for grants available, you might come up with something. Then again, you will have to follow strict guidelines.
Most movies that are government funded tend to showcase one aspect of the land or another. For example, you may be able to get a grant if you follow the lives of Native Americans for one year. After conforming to these rules, you can publish your film, and then move on to make the movie that you want.
